We always recommend taking insect repellant with you when visiting the Refuge. We have a good selection in the shop. We always recommend that if you’re using some natural or family friendly spray, you also take a can of the strong stuff just in case. You do not want to get caught out there on the lighthouse trail when your spray wears off– they’ll carry you away!

You can tell if the bugs are going to be bad based on the weather. If we’ve had a lot of rain a week or two ago, with hot/humid days, you can bet there will be bad mosquitos. We’ll have our “Skeeter Meter” posted on the shop door daily, and if you have any questions feel free to ask our staff!

What do you recommend for biting flies? We are coming down July 27-August 2. Thanks

  2. Cynthia says:

Ben’s Outdoor Spray! See you on the 27th.

  3. Lisa says:

My family and I will be there Sept. 4th–8th. What do you think the Mosquito, gnat, and flies will be like. Does Ben’s Outdoor spray contain deet? We have small children.

  4. Cynthia says:

Ben’s does contain DEET. We carry other sprays with and without DEET in the shop. Last year, the mosquitos were terrible on labor day weekend, but we had a lot of rain the week before–so much depends on weather! Gnats should not be bad and flies typically are not bothersome. Again, flies depend on the weather–which way the wind is blowing. It is hard to say what they will be like ahead of time, but we do advise you to bring your chosen brand of bug spray with you if you plan to visit Assateague.

  5. Michelle says:

What are the mosquitoes and other biting flying insects like typically at the end of May, around Memorial Day?

  6. Cynthia says:

It depends entirely on the weather! If it’s hot and humid with rain, we’ll have mosquitoes. The flies depend on the wind. Typically, Memorial Day isn’t as bad as later in the summer, but some years have been pretty miserable.

  7. Luke says:

How are the mosquitoes in early May?

  8. Cynthia says:

Depends on rain and temperatures but typically not bad at all that time of year

The official bird of Chincoteague, the Mosquito, is a major consideration for outside activities on the islands.  Be prepared!

Chincoteague and Assateague have several excellent hiking & biking trails.

Can I rent a bicycle for a whole week?  What about 20 minutes?  Should I take bug spray?
