Hello! We’re planning to be on Chincoteague this weekend, the 29th March. We’re wondering if we need to reserve bikes ahead? We need two adult and two kid’s size (for age 6 and 8 years). We’re not sure of our timing and would prefer to just stop in, if possible. Thanks 🙂

  2. Cynthia says:

    Hi Kimberly,

Unfortunately we haven’t figured out the logistics of taking reservations yet, but you shouldn’t have problems getting bikes on Friday. Saturday morning might be tough, but you can certainly rent them for the whole weekend if you’d like to ride throughout your visit.

If our door is closed when you arrive, you can sign bikes out at the Refuge Inn next door. See you in a few days!

  3. Mike says:

Will you still be renting bikes Sep 3-6 2013?

  4. Cynthia says:

    Hi Mike,

Absolutely! The shop itself should be open, but if by chance our door is locked, you can rent the bikes from the Refuge Inn next door.

  5. John Herman says:

Do you also repair personal bikes?

  6. Cynthia says:

Hi John, Unfortunately we are unable to repair personal bikes due to insurance concerns.

  7. Lisa says:

First I mistyped my email address which is…. Second forgot to mention we are staying at refuge inn…arriving late on June 7 but would like to make sure we have 3 bikes for 24 hrs… Morning of June 8th until morning of the 9 th…Thanks!

  8. Cynthia says:

Hi Lisa, though we do not take reservations, you shouldn’t have problems renting bikes that weekend. Send someone over before 9AM and you should be fine. See you soon!

  9. Amy Burnap says:

We would like to reserve 2 bikes for 5 days, July 1-5. We would also like a basket on each one and 1 bike lock. We will be arriving at the Inn on the 30th. Thank you

  10. Cynthia says:

    Hi Amy,

As stated on our FAQ page, we are unable to reserve bikes at this time. You are welcome to stop by when you get into town and pick out the bikes you’d like. See you soon!

  11. Emi Coffman says:

Hi. We –2adults and 2 children– are staying on the opposit side of the Island from Assteague Island.
When we are renting bikes, we will need to drive to your place.
Can we park our car at your place while we are biking?

  12. Cynthia says:

Sure! We have plenty of parking.

  13. Pat Beck says:

We are coming Oct. 18-19-20. Are you still open?

  14. Cynthia says:

Weather permitting, we will be here. Check at the Refuge Inn front desk if nobody is at the shop when you would like to rent the bikes.

  15. Connie McIntyre says:

My husband is handicapped and cant walk good and I need to know if you or anyone on the island rent electric scooter carts (ones similar to a hover round) so he can enjoy the trails with us? We will be arriving on Sept 6th. Thank you for your time.

  16. Cynthia says:

I am sorry to say that I do not know of anyone who rents mobility scooters here on Chincoteague. You might try asking the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge if they have any accessibility programs for their trails. Their phone number is 757-336-6122. Another option would be to ask at the local pharmacy, H&H, at 757-336-3115. Many of our guests who need oxygen are able to rent it from Apple Discount Drug in Salisbury, Maryland, and have the tanks delivered here. Best of luck!

  17. Jim weave says:

We are planning a bike trip on the Southern end of the eastern shore. A 5-6 day ride. I am concerned about crossing the bridge to Chincoteague ( 175) on bikes. Is there a shoulder on the bridge?

  18. Cynthia says:

Hi Jim, most of the causeway to Chincoteague has a shoulder; however, there are a few stretches where there is no shoulder at all. Folks ride across the causeway on bicycles occasionally, but itdoes not seem very safe for cyclist or driver. Traffic moves at 55 mph for about 3 miles, one lane in each direction. It is not illegal, as far as I know, but you might talk to the Chincoteague Police department to ask about an escort if there are more than a few of you.

  19. Liz Smith says:

Hi — We’re headed up from Norfolk on the day after Thanksgiving (11/29) — are you guys renting bikes that weekend? Weather is supposed to be cold but dry! Thanks, Liz

  20. Cynthia says:

It is looking to be a very busy weekend on the island, so we will be open! See you soon.

  21. Molly says:

Hi there! My boyfriend and I are planning an overnight for this weekend and were interested in renting bikes for the day on Saturday. I was curious about the rates for the winter time and availability. Also, whether or not we need to reserve them in advance or anything. Thanks!

  22. Cynthia says:

    Hi Molly,

The rates on the “bikes” page apply year round, and you will not need a reservation. Just come in to the front desk of the Refuge Inn signs they will sign the bikes out to you.

  23. carey says:

We are coming in July 2014 and was wanting to know if we drive onto the island and rent bikes, is everything (beach area, biking trails, and boat tours all w/i biking distances? Do we rent the day we come onto the island or do we reserve in advance? We were also wondering if there are any recommended family seafood restaurants on the islands. Please let me know and thanks for the info. Please email me any info you have thanks.

  24. Cynthia says:

Hi Carey! Chincoteague is only 7 miles long and a mile and a half wide (at its widest point) so everything is bikable. If you are doing a sunset cruise, you may want to drive as some of the roads aren’t very well lit and the shoulder is small. We do not take reservations so you can just stop by when you arrive. Several family seafood restaurants on the island, but our favorites are Bill’s (fancier) The Village, Don’s, and Steamers (all you can eat.)

    See you in July!

  25. Pete Wilson says:

What is the address of Bike Depot in Chincoteague?

    Thanks. Pete

  26. Cynthia says:

7058 Maddox Boulevard– Past the traffic circle and just before McDonald’s and the bridge to Assateague.

  27. Dave T says:

Hello – We have a limitation that we wont have a car. We would be taking a taxi from OC to Chincoteague, staying at Waterside Inn. We can pick the bike up, but we are stranded as we dont know if we would be able to drop it off at the refuge bike depot. My question is, do you guys help in that kind of scenario and help pick the bike yourself from our hotel?

  28. Lisa Cummings says:

Do you sell bicycles as well?

  29. Ginny says:

We are staying July 12-19, do we need to “reserve” bicycles for that week in advance? How far in advance?

  30. Regina Robinson says:

Hi, We are coming down for penning week and would like to know if it’s possible to reserve two bikes for 5 days? Is that advisable? If it’s possible to reserve what is the procedure?
    Thank you,

  31. Tesha says:

I’m interested in renting bikes to use on the nature/lighthouse trails. How would that work? Will the rentals be available close to the trails or would I have to haul them over there? I do not have a bike rack on my car.

  32. Cynthia says:

The trails are less than a mile from our rental store. You can ride on a separate bike trail nearly the entire way, so you would have no need to load them onto a car.

  33. Cynthia says:

Bikes are rented on a first come, first served basis. No reservations. See you the end of July!

  34. Cynthia says:

We do not take reservations. If you come in the afternoon or evening, You should have no problem getting your choice of bikes.

  35. Cynthia says:

Only during the fall and winter, when we are planning on purchasing a new fleet.

  36. Cynthia says:

Hello! Sorry I did not get to this sooner. It slipped past me in the email inbox. Typically we do not deliver or pick up bikes, but call us and ask to speak to Michael. He may be able to make some arrangements with you.

  37. Cynthia says:

Yes–used rental bicycles. They are only available in the fall and only when we are purchasing a new rental fleet.

  38. Lisa says:

Do you rent adult trikes? Do you have more than one?

  39. Cynthia says:

Hi Lisa! We have 2 adult tricycles.

  40. lisa says:

Hi, We will be down 8/25 and 8/26. We want to rent a tandem bike for my husband and my 8 year old daughter who is not comfortable on her own. would a tandem bike be ok for her to ride? she is 52 pounds and 4 ft 3 inches tall. thank you.

  41. Lisa Glavan says:

Thanks for your reply. We will be staying at the Refuge Inn Monday to Wednesday 8/25-8/27. Do we need to reserve the bike? We would look to reserve it Tuesday most likely. Thank you again.

  42. Cynthia says:

Hello! Either a tandem or tag-a-long would be OK for your daughter to ride. She can try both when you arrive to see which she prefers.

  43. Cynthia says:

Hello again! We don’t take reservations, but if you want to be sure to have the bike you want, rent it Monday evening for 24 hours– that way you’ll have it the whole next day! We don’t usually run out in the evening, but the morning can sometimes be iffy.

  44. Justin says:

    To Whom It May Concern:

My name is Justin Fink and I’m going to be in Chincoteague for Memorial Day weekend. I was wondering if you had two cruiser bikes available for May 23 & May 24?

Additionally, how close are you to Assateague Island and can we take these bikes into the park? We are looking to just get out to the beach and get around Assateague a bit? Also, do you have beach gear available those days?

  45. Cynthia says:

Hi Justin! As started on our FAQ page, we don’t take reservations. Well be open those days and expect to be busy if the weather is nice–however, we usually only run out in the morning between 9 and 11. Beach gear will be available on a first come, first served basis as well.

We are very close to Assateague Island (~1/4 mile at most) and there are lots of trails there to explore on a bike. See you soon!

  46. Ken says:

We will be guests at the “Refuge Inn” beginning on Monday August 3, If we rent bikes for three days, are they available to us 24 hours a day and is there a way to secure them at the “Inn” when we are not using them. We like to get up EARLY (06:00) in the morning and bike ride. .

  47. Cynthia says:

Yes! Just let the bike depot know you will be keeping them overnight. You can rent a lock for $1 a day and lock the bikes in the bike racks at the inn. That way, they will be available for your use whenever you want to ride!

  48. Maureen DeArmitt says:

    Hi There!

We are coming in Fri, March 25 – 27th and we were wondering if we need to reserve bikes for Sat? We would need two tandem bikes and one single for a 13 year old girl. Feel free to call me at (703) 868-1200 if you need a deposit for the bikes.

    Thanks so much! Maureen

  49. Cynthia says:

We don’t take reservations so we’ll see you at the shop! We normally only run out on weekend mornings with excellent biking weather.

  50. Amanda says:

Do you all offer any military discounts or discounts for Refuge Inn stayers? Thank you.

  51. Joe says:

What time do you close on friday night the 24th. Coming down and staying till Monday and would like to get two adult bikes to get around on.

  52. Cynthia says:

Between 6 and 8pm, depending on weather.

  53. Cynthia says:

We don’t offer any discounts, but the Refuge Inn will gladly give anyone with a Military ID a 10% discount.

  54. Bethany S. says:

Hi, do you have a good supply of beach umbrellas and beach chairs? Just wondering if I can save the hassle and space by not packing these items.
    We’ll be there next week!

  55. E. Heigle says:

Do you rent heavy duty beach chairs?

  56. sue says:

Hi Will you still be renting bike on Sept 20 -27? I will need 5 bikes and a pull trailer for a child

  57. Karen says:

Do you offer guided bike tours of the island?

  58. Cynthia says:

No, sorry– I don’t know of any businesses that offer this due to the regulations surrounding the federal wildlife refuge. We can, however, give you a map and tell you about points of interest!

  59. Cynthia says:

Yes, we will be renting bikes! Our cycles are first-come, first-served, no reservations– so we’ll see you on the 20th.

  60. Cynthia says:

We rent aluminum beach chairs. They are pretty heavy duty!

  61. JustChecking says:

Do you have a weight limit?

  62. Cynthia says:

Some equipment has a weight limit– kiddie karts hold 50 lbs, child seats hold 25 lbs, and beach chairs hold 250 lbs. Our bikes, especially the large-frame mens bikes, do not have a weight limit.

  63. Faith says:

    What are your hours?

  64. Michele Mason says:

How long and how high is the bridge between assategue and Chincoteague ?

  65. Cynthia says:

Not very long and not very high. Children bike it with ease all the time! The rise coming back to Chincoteague is a bit steep, and sometimes young children or folks tired out from a day at the beach will hop off and walk the bike up, and then coast nearly the whole way back to the shop.

  66. Cynthia says:

In the summer, we are open 8am until at least 7pm (usually open til 8.) We do close early for inclement weather.

  67. Amber Hairfield says:

How many inches are the beach cruiser bikes? 24″ or 26″ ? We are going to be vacationing there July 29- Aug. 3 is there anything that we should know before coming or anything we should be sure to bring?

  68. Cynthia says:

We have 20″ 24″ and 26″ beach cruisers, plus a few large-frame mens’ bikes.

    Bring water and bug spray!

  69. Amber says:

How much to rent the beach chairs?

  70. Cynthia says:

  71. Dave Terrill says:

Michael, last season we discussed the sale of a bike. I’ll be there Sept. 3-9, and just looking to verify that you have set one aside as promised.

    Thanks, Dave

  72. Cynthia says:

Hi Dave! A bike is set aside for you and is ready for pickup. Michael said he’ll see you this weekend or next week.

  73. Tracie says:

Hi! My family of 5 (I ncluding 2 kids 8 and13 yrsold) would like to rent Wednesday thru Friday this coming week, 4/4-4/6. Should we reserve?

    How much? Thanks!

  74. Cynthia says:

Hello! We don’t take reservations but we haven’t been running out of bikes so far this Spring Break, so just stop on by! Regular bikes are $3/hr or $14/day. See you soon!

  75. Kally says:

    Good morning,

I’m bringing a group of 22 scouts and parents to Assateague on July 14th. We are planning to rent bikes in the evening, around 5 PM. Do you usually have a good supply around that time?

  76. Cynthia says:

Hello! Though we do normally have a good supply of bikes around that time, please give us a call at 757-336-5511 and ask for the Bike Depot, then speak to Terri or Michael. They can make a note of your group. That way we’ll expect your arrival and be sure to have staff and bikes ready to go.

  77. Alexis says:

If I am renting bikes for a few hours, am I able to keep my car parked there while we do so?

  78. Cynthia says:

    Of course!

  79. Lisa says:

Do you have bike helmets for rent? If so do you have ones that will fit an 8 month old and a 3 year old?
    Thank you!

  80. Lisa says:

Do you rent bike helmets? If so do you have ones to fit an 8 month old and a 3 year old?
    Thank you!

  81. Cynthia says:

Yes, we have helmets for $1. We have some for the 3-year old for sure but the 8-month old is dependent on head size. You might be better served bringing your own (or stop at Walmart on the way down) since it will definitely fit well.

  82. Laura says:

Hi me and my family were planning to rent bikes for our whole trip, do you guys provide bike locks or should we bring our own?

  83. Cynthia says:

Hello! We rent them for $1 a day.

  84. Kerry says:

Hi, I just have an easy question I might have missed the answer to. Is there any deposit fee for the rentals other than the rental fee itself?

  85. Cynthia says:

No deposit! We do take a credit card number or hold a driver’s license just in case you don’t come back 😉

  86. MARC SPETALNIK says:

    Hi bike guys,

My family and I will be arriving at Chincoteague this coming Sat., 8/25, at around noon, and we’ll want to rent the following bikes for the rest of the day: 2 beach cruisers + 1 beach cruiser with a child seat. Please let me know I can secure a reservation, and we’ll take it from there. Thanks so much.

  87. Cynthia says:

    Hi Marc,

We don’t take reservations. Everything is first come, first served– but we don’t typically run out of the bikes you’ve requested. See you Saturday!
